Anthem infamously flopped upon its arrival way back in 2019, and at the start of next year, it will no longer be playable. Now, in a lengthy YouTube video, former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah has spoken about how the game came to be, and how it got its shaky start. He explained that Mass Effect director Casey Hudson was not only pitching a new game, but a fresh vision for BioWare.
“What Casey is pitching to EA is BioWare as a new thing,” Darrah said. “It’s BioWare as a new thing. It’s BioWare doing storytelling but doing it in a live service, always online, brand-new business model, brand-new way of thinking about the way we tell storytelling.”
According to Darrah, a lot of what Hudson initially conceived didn’t really make it into the end result, but it’s “why Anthem was able to generate this much momentum within the organization, because what Casey was essentially pitching was, ‘What if it’s a BioWare game but it could do FIFA numbers?'”
