Former PlayStation exclusive Helldivers 2 has had an absolutely massive Xbox launch.
Helldivers 2 launched August 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC gamers. The sci-fi shooter was a surprise hit, selling more than 12million copies in its first few months and winning big at the 2024 Game Awards.
Earlier this year, it was confirmed Helldivers 2 would be launching for Xbox on August 26 and cross-play between different platforms would also be possible. A Halo crossover was also announced for Xbox players.
When it initially launched, more than 500,000 Xbox players were online at the same time which caused issues with the servers and saw player numbers spike on PC (via Steam). One week later, it’s reported that Xbox players have bought almost a million copies of Helldivers 2.
“As of yesterday (six days after launch), Helldivers 2 landed 926,000 copies on Xbox. The pent-up demand for this incredible game speaks for itself. In fact, the PlayStation version had sold 633,000 copies six days after launching last year,” reads the report from Alinea Analytics. However official sales data has yet to be shared.
The same day that Helldivers 2 was released, the remastered Gears Of War Reloaded launched on PlayStation. It was the first-time the sci-fi shooter has ever been available on PlayStation but in its first six days, it only sold 259,000 copies.
“I hope we do see more crossover games in the future. As a gamer it’s great and I’m loving Helldivers,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “While it’s a good sign for Sony to consider allowing more of their properties on the Xbox platform, I think a lot of heavy lifting has been done in the last year by the fan base as hype goes. It’s the social media presence and content that had a lot of Xbox players frothing at the mouth to get their hands on it, I count myself among them,” added another.
Despite the successful Xbox launch of Helldivers 2, the title will “definitely not” be coming to Xbox Game Pass and there are “no plans” for that to change in the future, claimed a Discord community manager (via Gaming Bolt).
